Movie Reviews

Spoiler free review. Let me first start of by saying that I am not a Marvel ''fanboy'' or a DC nerd. The comic book genre of films have made it to my personal top 3 favourite genres in the last decade and the MCU has been a strong contributor to that rise. I hold the first Ironman, first Avengers and Captain America 1+2 in high regard. I did not like the direction they took with Iron Man 3 (more on this below) or Guardians of the Galaxy but Winter Soldier was a gem in terms of balancing solid action, drama and levity.

That being said, my initial thoughts on Age of Ultron (AoU) are quite negative. To me, its essentially a carbon copy of IM3. There are problems which strike you repeatedly as you progress throughout the film. The 2 biggest complaints I have with AoU is 1) the tone (comedy) 2) the script/writing.

So starting with the tone. I like to laugh as I'm sure most people do, but there is a time and place to exhibit your comedy writing skills in an action film. In AoU, its a constant, recurring and predictable theme. It's not limited to one character either, everyone is popping one liner jokes as if its the Expendables and yes, most are not funny. The timing of these moments of levity are horrible too, desensitizing the viewer to any impending fear of death in battle. If the characters seem so relaxed in not worrying about possibly dying, then what suspense is needed to be held by the audience? This plagued IM3 in a bad way and its arguably worse here. The comic book films which achieved great success in this regard were XMen DOFP, The Avengers 1, Cap 2 even Dark Knight Rises! Can you imagine at the climax of Xmen DOFP if old Magneto and Storm and Bishop start pulling one liner jokes as the army of sentinels came charging at them? It would kill any tension! 2) The script. I won't say too much since this is a spoiler free review, but it really feels rushed and unorganized. I watched Fast 7 around 2 weeks before AoU and I got similar vibes. Again, its not the fact that the film is 2.5 hours long or has too many characters, that isn't am excuse since The Dark Knight and Xmen DOFP shows how to navigate these theatrical obstacles. There are a few completely unnecessary subplots in AoU and useless characters which do not impact the story overall. The villain himself, Ultron is another massive let-down in Marvels already growing catalogue of mishandled villains.

So as a summary, if you want mindless action and cool CGI, which this film does offer in the form of some spectacular visual fight scenes then you will like AoU. If you are after a darker, grounded and more moving story like the trailers promised, you will be severely disappointed. Final score 6/10 and I am being kind since Cap is my fav Avenger and they finally gave him some good screen time.

Movie Reviews

Mad Max: Fury road - first of all it is wrong title. main leading role Charlize Theron as Furiosa that supposed movie be named by first leading role. Theron is impressive as always as. tom hardy as supporting main character Max is not impressive. his mediocre acting and lethargic entry do not contribute to total scene. i was expecting someone sharp in action like Jason statham or splendid actor in recent scene good as Ryan Gosling at all. by the way i don't like storyline too, but action is good and constant. nux played by Nicolas hoult British actor is most controversial character. first he was orthodox religion fanatic fascinated by immortal Joe and vikings too. he believed in Valhalla(Nordic paradise) and then he turned his life views by 180° and became a member of running party of furiosa. furiosa is most stupidest female name for leading female role. i don't heard name stupid like that not even in Spain or Mexico. furiosa??? villains do not look scary like in original mad max 1 or 2. only action is constant but storyline is not impressive. furiosa stealing pregnant and virgins, than escaping. she leading to gasoline city but she dragging another tank with 300 gallons of fuel? then leading left to enemy territory. and 50 vehicles cant stop one truck? why they didn't simple shoot to thires? in that case film wouldn't be attractive or interesting. that no longer i must admit i am not impressed and i was expecting much more. mad max 1 and 2 are much better movies.

A stoner - who is in fact a government agent - is marked as a liability and targeted for extermination. But he's too well-trained and too high for them to handle.

Reviews

When it comes to blending action with comedy, some films hit the mark (Lethal Weapon & Rush Hour) and others, don't (Paul Blart) but when you combine action/suspense with stoner comedy, then what leads is one of the most fun films you'll see this summer.

Mike Howell (Jesse Eisenberg) is an everyday small-town stoner, who works a bland job at a market, with the goal of marrying his girlfriend, Phoebe (Kirsten Stewart) but what he doesn't know, is that he's actually an experiment conducted by a CIA agent named Victoria Lasseter (Connie Britton) and that the CIA has put out a hit on him. With lots of time and money invested in Howell, Lasseter goes out to his little town and "activates" him, turning him into a stone-cold killer. But while he's the perfect killer, he's also a sweet guy who just wants to be with his girlfriend.

First off, I want to say that this flick was funny as hell and chocked full of good action. I had a good time watching it and I was rooting for Mike all the way. But while this film is awesome, I have some complaints but i'll get to them after the pros.

Jesse Eisenberg nails the role of stoner perfectly. He's a chilled out lovable guy who just wants to be with his girlfriend and a joint of marijuana. You want to climb into the screen and smoke a fat one with him. and you want to watch his back when he's surrounded by 6 assassins...not that he'd need you.

Kirsten Stewart might be known best for her role in Twilight and of course we all know how much those stories mean to single women who spend a lot of time writing fanfictions inspired from a Danielle Steel paperback, but here, she's actually not that bad. She needs to do more comedy cause she works well as the "straight man" or woman in this case. Although she might be typecast for romance films, maybe someone like Ellen Page or Kaya Scodelario would've been a better Phoebe, but hey, it's Kirsten Stewart. can't change it now.

Connie Britton fits her role well too. It's almost like watching Colonel Trautman with Rambo from First blood, assuming Mike Howell is John Rambo.

OK, now the complaints. first, the obvious. The shaky camera....Hollywood, get it through your thick dumb skulls; We HATE shaky cameras during fight scenes. It doesn't make the scene more exciting or interactive, it just makes the fighting hard to see. Enough already!

John Leguizamo. The guy is awesome, one of my personal favorite actors and half the reason I came to see this movie. And they gave him the persona of a wigga. Really? This guy was Benny Blanco from the Bronx and Luigi Mario...OK, maybe that wasn't his shining role as Luigi but he should've at least gotten more screen time.

Overall, I totally recommend this film, but maybe you should get baked before going to see it. Or at least get baked for the ending.

Reviews

Do not watch this film on a full bladder. You will wet yourself laughing. Believe me. I know. Witherspoon and Vergara are, appallingly, funny together. It doesn't much matter what's happening with the plot. Everything they do is funny. It is a grand farce driven by deliriously 'over the top' characterisations from both of these divine comediennes. The absurd becomes the sublime with this fortunate pairing.

In their early days at the Hal Roach studio in the mid 1920s', Laurel and Hardy would gather up director Leo McCarey, the great Scottish actor, Jimmy Finlayson as their usual foil, a skeleton crew and would head out onto the streets of Culver City to make a movie. With no script and armed with only a concept like Big Businesses' trying to sell a Christmas trees door to door in July. They just went out and improvised and had fun; lots and lots of fun. This movie has the same mad, inventive spontaneity as the classics. It must have caught our worthy but over cautious critics off guard. So desperately do they want to be taken seriously that they are prone to dismiss fun for it's own priceless sake lest they be on the outside of movie critic hipster land looking in with no one that 'matters' looking back. Kudos to Stephanie Zacharek for getting it right.

Reviews

AntMan is a lesser know character of marvels but by no means does that effect the quality of this movie. First off I thought that the casting of this film wasn't going to work, that been Paul Rudd mainly, just because I have read a few of the AntMan comics and didn't think it was going to work, I was wrong he is brilliant, hilarious and believable, all of the jokes he made actually made laugh out load which doesn't happen much. Michael Pena was great in this film, he plays the same kind of character he always seems too, but it really works, especially the story telling scenes were hilarious. This was a all round well cast film.

The action and CGI Was great, on first thoughts I thought when AntMan shrinks down that the CGI would take you out of the movie but let me tell you it doesn't, it's awesome! Especially seeing the world from that size and scenes where AntMan is shrinking and enlarging when fighting i thought would get a little too much but the honestly don't.

All around I AntMan felt different to all the other MCU movies that have come out, but a good different.    A well cast, directed and acted film that will be a welcome addition to my marvel collection.

This is actually a good movie to watch when your just alone and want to see something by yourself............................................. I see a lot of reviews on this movie talking bad about it .. Some say it ruined a date or wasn't entertaining, that makes me believe those comments come from people who always expect a movie to have nudes and sexy scenes to help them get laid or from kids who just like cool Michael Bay explosions.............................................. This is a slow paced movie and its just what it was intended to be, like for example "sin city" in movies like that you cant expect total realism, there's some art in it. its not great but not bad too...... the end.

Movie Review

One of this film's leading Bond Girls, Italian model and actress Monica Bellucci, once starred opposite James Bond character contender Clive Owen in an action-espionage film called Shoot 'Em Up (2007), where Owen's performance and characterization was compared with James Bond. The picture was released actually in the year Two Double-O Seven (2007). In Shoot 'Em Up (2007), the first gun Smith (Clive Owen) uses is a Walther PPK, the usual gun of James Bond. The gun jams on him, and he calls it a "piece of crap". This is considered to be an in-joke to the fact that Owen was once considered for the role of Bond which eventually went to Daniel Craig.

Movei Reviews

The stunning Rupert Friend explodes onto the screen here as "Agent 47" – one of a numbered group of genetically DNA engineered 'Hitman' from the popular video game giving a second try at a film franchise here. Hannah Ware plays Katia van Dees, the daughter of a missing scientist Dr. Litvenko (Ciarán Hinds) who back in the 1960's was responsible for creating a super-soldier program that brought Agent 47, and at least 46 other deadly assassins into the world. Syndicate International, one of those typical diabolical organizations that always seem to exist, run by Le Clerq (Thomas Kretschmann) wants Katia's father as they think he holds the secrets to making more. Agent 47's employers want her dead.

Zachary Quinto's aptly named character John Smith – who's name pun you will understand when watching.. seems not to really fit his part in the beginning..after a few decent plot twists in his favour he turns it around and pulls his character off. He after all is also an 'agent' in a sense with a pretty neat change up of DNA in him.

Along with a bland storyline and too many plot holes to count or even care about, the films plus side is in if there is one demographic that it would try to please, it's obvious that aim is for 15-20 yr olds video-gamers who live for hours stepping into this world of CGI-done assassins killing off his enemies while wreaking maximum havoc in the process. And oh..the blood looks good. I'm serious it really does.

Friend as Agent 47, is a killing machine fighting other killing machines with whom I'd thought that we'd seen every imaginable killing stunt – but this film truly does become imaginative in that area and comes up with some doozies I'd think the likes of us haven't even dreamed up.

In the end, we do have a few surprise twists but there is no spark of life is to be found in a few of the characters most disappointingly in Ware, whose Katia is meant to be the supposed emotional linchpin of the enterprise. We've seen Friend do the cold and calculating before as Peter Quinn on Homeland where he actually scares us at times. The same goes here, American accent included. They have a few moments of mild playfulness mostly that Friend tries half heartedly to inject in their partnership without much success.

And of course what would the ending be if not to give us a little after name credits roll – scene of what is to come. And for the third time in a month, I'm seeing in that teaser scene what will probably be a better sequel than original.

End note: Paul Walker was scheduled to play Agent 47 and due to his untimely and tragic passing, Rupert Friend stepped in. RIP Paul

Movie Reviews

For "The Gunman" (2015) Sean Penn bulked up and he looks the part. He's a solidly convincing actor whose work I always enjoy. He's good in this action role, looking weathered, tough and professional. The story is reasonably novel, and the movie comes off quite well with some good action sequences. I particularly liked the staging of an attempt to kill Penn and his pretty amour Jasmine Trinca while they were inside a fancy isolated mansion-villa in Spain, and also the sequence at a bullfight where again he is chased. Local color adds to the entertainment; Cape Town and South Africa served as stand-ins for Congo.

Penn is suddenly being hunted by the people unknown to him who were once his distant shadowy employers when he did "bad things" such as assassinating the Congo's Minister of Mines 6 or 8 years back. He has to discover who they are and hunt them while they are hunting him. He's on the run but also investigating. He relies on Ray Winstone for help, a pleasure always to see his acting. He goes to Barcelona looking for leads to contact the man who led the assassination operation, Javier Bardem, who married Penn's girl friend when Penn had to abruptly flee the Congo after the assassination.

I'm afraid that the rest of the cast did not project as well on the screen as Penn and Winstone, and this prevented the movie from rising to the heights. Penn and Winstone are right into their parts. Javier Bardem sounds like Raul Julia but has substantial trouble being convincing. He's not convincing as a man who could induce Trinca to marry him, for example. He's not convincing in a sequence in which he is drunk. Raul Julia, were he alive and the right age, or Benicio del Toro would have been much better. The chief villain is Mark Rylance. He's adequate in the role but no more. Failings of the script perhaps contributed to that somewhat, but his emotional level wasn't conveyed well enough to make a mark and raise this picture above others in its class. One thinks of some of the truly effective and non-grotesque opponents to James Bond like Gert Frobe, Joseph Wiseman, Donald Pleasance, Adolpho Celi and Charles Gray. The story is weak regarding the character played by Trinka. We really do not understand her character. Toward the end, a small amount of politically-oriented material enters in that is handled ineptly as it attempts to identify the imperial interests interested in exploiting African resources. This doesn't help the film either.

Consequently, the film, while watchable for the most part, inasmuch as Penn is in almost every scene, does have its weaknesses, leaving me to rate it as average. I'd rewatch it for the well-staged action sequences and for the difficulties faced by Penn's character, but I doubt it would become a favorite.

Movie Reviews

I was lucky enough to catch a limited release screening of this film here in Australia as I was in high anticipation to see it after more than enjoying the first Raid film and in no way was I disappointed with this film. This is honestly, by far, one of the best sequels in existence today. The isolated first film is completely removed of all boundaries and expanded it to this ultra-violent masterpiece. First the possible negatives for some people; this movie is very long and structured differently to the first (Beginning Story - Action Centre - Ending Story) this film follows a back and forth style of (Story - Action - Story - Action) so the accumulation of story is quite large meaning a lot of reading for English viewers. Another possible negative is the fact this film feels almost nothing like the first film, the first being like an action survival story while this film is an action, espionage, martial arts film filled with gangs and all different personalities though in my opinion this gives the film a fresh style for viewers. If you were expecting same old style you may be disappointed but there is an American remake of the first film in production. The final possible negative is the vast amount of brutal and graphic violence throughout the film, this is one of the most violent action films I have ever seen but I enjoy the extreme violence side of cinema but those with a light stomach may find this film difficult for the sheer amount of blood there is in this movie in comparison to the first. These negatives in my eyes are strong points for the film in my eyes but to others might not be. To the positives which there are plenty of, firstly and most important; the action. As you probably would've expected the action in this film is the greatest bone crunching action you will most likely see in your whole life, its gritty and incredibly well planned style makes it like a form of bloody art. Gareth Evans knows exactly what he is doing here. One of my favorite aspects of the films was the direction. The slow pans and zooms Evans uses to build suspense as well as a perfect use of slow motion, not over the top in any way, just give the film an added visual style which boosts it even further. Evans also knows exactly how to build up an action scene, one of my absolute favorite fight scenes in the film in the prison yard fight which is so incredibly well choreographed whilst having this dark and suspenseful build up to the fight. This film try's a lot of new things and all of which work for example are car chase scene which is one of the best I've seen in any movie. The story in this film delivers what the first film was lacking, putting characters in the flesh and making you care a lot more, even for the villains. And with good story and characters of course comes excellent acting which is often rare in action films, these actors are absolutely teeming with talent, all of which can act and can fight. As I read the credits I could only see two stunt doubles for the whole film which is saying something. This is an absolute must see for any action film fan, it is nothing short of a masterpiece and needs to receive the credit it absolutely deserves
